SCORM played easy, swift, and smooth

A new SCORM player is here, freshly delivered by Learnforce. Like a high-end engine rebuilt with classic elegance, the new SCORM player stays true to its purpose while delivering a faster, simpler, and smoother Learnforce experience.

We’ve created our own proprietary SCORM player, purpose-built to run SCORM 1.2 and SCORM 2004 courses directly from the Learnforce platform. These improvements span every part of the course experience, including set up, data handling, launch, and learner feedback. Here's a summary of what's changed:

  • Set up
We’ve simplified SCORM configuration in the Learnforce Activity Builder (LAB) by replacing a series of technical settings with two straightforward options: Show Header with Exit button and Launch course in new window.
  • Data handling
We’ve fixed the suspend_data character limit, enabling larger courses to store their required data without hitting a wall.
  • Launch
SCORM courses now launch with a single click, allowing learners to open a SCORM course directly from your Portal without being inconvenienced by extra popups and additional clicks.
  • Learner Feedback
The learner feedback option is now available in the LAB for SCORM courses. An admin can now enable (or disable) learner feedback when they create or edit a SCORM course via the LAB.

Previously, SCORM courses were handled by a third-party engine. These changes represent a significant step forward in how SCORM content is delivered and managed in Learnforce. The new player removes that dependency entirely, meaning courses load faster, integrate more seamlessly into Learnforce, and no longer suffer from third-party cookie issues that some customers previously experienced.

New for Admins

Reduced complexity

The SCORM course options in the Activity Builder (LAB) Options tab have been significantly simplified. The previous collection of technical launch settings has been replaced with two straightforward toggles under Launch Behaviour:

  • Show Header with Exit button
Creates a branded header within the course containing the portal logo, course title, and an Exit button. Toggled ON by default for new courses.
  • Open course in new window
Opens the course in a new browser window. Toggled OFF by default for new courses.

To reduce complexity, all previous Launch Behaviour and New Window Options settings have now been removed. This makes it easier for the admin to achieve the desired results and creates a more elegant, streamlined effect for the student when launching the course.

NOTE

After migration, the header will be visible by default in all existing courses. If this is not desired, it can be turned off by navigating to the LAB Dashboard, opening the relevant course, selecting the SCORM page, clicking the Options tab, and toggling Show Header with Exit button to OFF.

Learner Feedback Now Available in SCORM Courses

Admins can now enable Learner Feedback in LAB for SCORM courses via the course’s main Options tab. When enabled, learners will be prompted to leave a rating and feedback upon course completion.

SCORM Tracking Reports

SCORM Tracking information is now available in the LMS when a learner starts or completes a SCORM course. To find this information in LMS, go to the user’s account, then:

  • Select the Learning Activities tab > click the required Objective > when the Course box opens, select the SCORM Tracking tab.

New for Course Developers

Character limit issue fixed

Previously, large SCORM courses could encounter issues with the suspend_data field due to a character limit restriction. This limitation has been removed in the new player. As a result, large courses, such as those with extensive data or complex variables, will no longer experience this issue.

No Third-Party Cookie Issues

As our new SCORM player operates from the same domain as your Learnforce Portal, the third-party cookie restrictions that previously caused issues for some customers no longer apply.

New for Learners

Direct Launch

For learners, the new SCORM player provide a more seamless and faster experience, no more clicking through extra popups just to launch a course. Now, SCORM Activity courses can launch directly from the learner’s Dashboard or My Training page, without them having to click that extra Launch Course button.

NOTE

LAB Activity course can have a SCORM component (a SCORM LAB course). These courses require the Launch Course button so that the SCORM component of the course can be opened.

Migration Details

Mindtools Kineo will be migrating all existing SCORM courses to the new player over the next month. No action is required from customers, and, in most cases, the transition will be seamless and unnoticeable.

The one visible change after migration is that all existing SCORM courses will display the header (logo, title, and exit button) by default. If you would prefer to remove the header from any course, this can be done at any time via the course’s main Options tab in LAB.
