Nutritional Needs of People in Aged Care
People living in residential aged care facilities are at risk of developing nutritional problems that may impact on their health.
As we age we become less physically active and we have less energy. We can begin to lose our ability to taste, smell and chew food. We become less sensitive to feeling thirst, and we see an increase in chronic disease or disability. This means that as we age, we are at a higher risk of malnutrition. For those who work in aged care, it is important to understand that clients rely on you to provide them with the nutrition that they need to survive and thrive.
The provision of food that meets their nutritional needs is critical to maintaining optimal physical and mental health. An understanding of the nutritional needs in this group of people and how aging and illness can alter theses needs is critical. It helps those in the health care team to identify nutrition related issues and implement appropriate strategies.
This course has been developed to provide learners with an understanding of the nutritional needs of people in aged care facilities.
