Musculoskeletal injuries account for more than 60% of all injuries suffered by employees that work in aged care. Staff turnover in residential aged care facilities is almost at 30%, and registered nurse turnover is even higher, at 35%. Replacing qualified staff can cost companies over $100,00. It makes good business sense to keep your staff safe and prevent the risk of them suffering an MSD acquired in the workplace.
Manual tasks are performed with different muscles and parts of the body. Manual tasks can become hazardous if they involve:
-
repetitive or sustained force
-
high or sudden force
-
repetitive movement
-
sustained or awkward posture, and/or
-
exposure to vibration.
These factors cause stress on the body in the short term and can accumulate over time. This stress can lead to musculoskeletal disorders, or MSDs. MSDs are a major category of injury in aged care workplaces, due to the many common tasks that staff working in residential or home care perform, such as:
-
pushing someone in a wheelchair
-
pushing a trolley
-
moving a consumer in a lifter
-
repositioning a consumer
-
attending to consumer hygiene needs, and
-
assisting consumers out of a seated position.
The Manual Tasks in Aged Care course contains important information about why it is important to safely perform manual tasks, how to identify hazards and assess risks that are associated with performing manual tasks and how to safely perform manual tasks in an aged care environment. It also contains information about safe patterns of movement, which is important to help reduce the risk of musculoskeletal injuries.
“The burden of musculoskeletal injuries in care staff continues to strain this already-stretched and vital workforce. This course provides effective, easy-to-understand and up-to-the-minute information that is essential for care workers to manage workplace risks and reduce the likelihood of being injured. The benefits of good risk management and control, along with safe work practices cannot be underestimated.” (Jo Bills; Occupational Health Physiotherapist, Nationally Accredited Trainer & Assessor, Director, PhysioLink and course subject matter expert)
This course features engaging animations, interactive case study scenarios set in aged care environments and information that focusses on important behavioural change to protect workers from injuries.
