Healthy Heart Program
Heart disease kills, but it’s preventable. We get it; you’re busy, fast food is easy and the couch is comfy. But it doesn’t have to be like that.
Australians spend billions of dollars per year on fast food. Six million of us aren’t getting the exercise we need. Fifty Australians die every day due to smoking. Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death and disability in Australia and around the world. There is a great deal of research about the risk factors for heart disease that can be used to reduce the development of heart disease. Individuals can improve their heart health by understanding and improving their heart disease risk factor profile.
Course description
These courses developed in partnership with the University of South Australia, are for anyone who is interested in improving their heart health, or organisations looking to promote health and wellbeing amongst its employees.
The Healthy Heart Program consists of seven courses, each with their own learning outcomes:
- Healthy Heart Fundamentals provides an understanding of:
- the basic elements of a heart-healthy lifestyle
- the importance of a heart-healthy lifestyle, and
- how you can make healthy changes to your lifestyle.
- Blood Pressure and Your Heart provides an understanding of:
- what blood pressure is
- the risk factors that can cause high blood pressure, and
- how to identify which risk factors can be improved through lifestyle changes.
- Healthy Eating and Your Heart provides an understanding of:
- the key elements of a heart healthy diet, and
- how food can affect the risk factors for heart disease.
- Healthy Weight and Your Heart provides an understanding of:
- the relationship between weight and heart disease
- how much energy the body requires, and
- how to choose a heart healthy diet.
- Diabetes and Your Heart provides an understanding of:
- diabetes as a condition
- how and why diabetes develops, and
- how to prevent it developing.
- Physical Activity and Your Heart provides an understanding of:
- how activity levels affect health
- the factors that can prevent us from exercising adequately, and
- strategies to help us increase our level of physical activity.
- Shopping and Your Heart provides an understanding of:
- the importance of pre-planning your shop
- strategies to make healthy shopping decisions, and
- how to read nutrition labels.
